After Playboy…

When Esquire left nudes in 1960 the Varga pin-up replaced in the Playboy. After a decade appeared a new magazine, the Penthouse and became the rival of Playboy. That’s why Playboy created Oui (followed the french L’ui magazine).

The pinups of Oui magazine were similar to Vargas pinups, created by Aslan who’s art and style followed the realistic ways. Petty and Vargas both kept the romantics of the soft pin-up style with a bit of comics style while Aslan used the sharp realistyc, glovning style. Aslan had started his carreer as a sculptor and of course had high skills in human body and realism. His early pin-ups followed the way of Petty or Vargas with more shine and with acut humour. His later pin-ups were more cold and sexual because of Penthouse.
Aslan’s subjects presents the stylish, young women of the 60′s 70′s while the Vargas and Petty pinups were-of course-more sophisticated. This change also appeared on Vargas latest works in Playboy. Vargas 60′s styled women weren’t the best works to show that age because he wasn’t empathize on that decade well and Aslan’s works were the difference because they gave a great wiev on that age and became contemporary and authentic too. He was success with his works on Penthouse and Oui. His works not specifically cheesecake works but we have to mention them. Cheesecake must be provocative and seductive but never to be directly sexual.

Vargas leaved Playboy and followed the many other artists who had created amazing and legendary things and every book in this subject mention their artworks and life. In this period appeared two other artists who mixed the modern styles with the olds:Patrick Nagel and Olivia de Berardinis.
Nagel mixed the art nouveau, the 1920′s art deco posters and japanese woodtables. His works are sharp and stylized, colored mixture of lines. There are a few similar things in Olivia’s works too.
