Let’s clear up the definitions!
What is pin-up?
The expression simple meaning is expose someting, put something on a wall for example.
The second and more important meaning for us is the following: pin-up is a person who sexually attractived posing in photographs, paintings, etc. A person –women in general-who beautiful with attitude of the golden ages.
The word ’pin-up’ was used first in the 1940’s but the culture of beautiful women ( what we see we say ’yes, this is a pin-up stylw’) is older than you could think. It’s history started in the 1870’s with Jules Chéret and his posters. In the 1940’s pin-ups were adored by the American troops cause they give hope for the soldiers to return home and they remembered them women who’re waiting for at home.
Classic pin-up: a woman who have absolutely THE calssic women look. Women who live and were pin-ups in the 1940-50’s are naturally in the classic pin-up line too. Classic pin-ups were painted of many and many amazing talented artists like George Petty, Gil Elvgren…. In the begginings painted and photographed pin-ups were both dominant nevertheless most artists use photos only for a base of their arts.
When you paint something, a person for example, you bring all of your spirits, personality and thinkings on it. It’s another way to show a subject than photographs. They show another reality, another meanings.
Classic pin-up examples: Betty Grable, Bettie Page, Marilyn
Modern pin-up: nowadays this is a very wide definition. If you see a pretty girl posing on magazines, etc. that’s pin-up too. But in another way bring forward the culture of beautiful women in this new age.
But there is also another way, what we do too: bring forward and keeping alive the classical pin-up culture and attitude to our new age. These women have the classic pin-up spirit using the beautiful and adorable cliches or show new subjects, new ideas. There are a lot of another styles under the term ’modern’ what show pin-up in another point of view like: fetish pin-ups, hot rod pin-ups, burlesque, modern cheesecake…etc.
