The age of pin-up photography
Cheesecake photography had already existed from the beggining of the style but hadn’t so famous till the 40′s-50′s.
When america sent soldiers to the oversea areas they need something, a hope that something or somebody waits for them at home, that’s why they took pin-up photos with them. Cheesecake pictures was painted on the fronts of airplanes and there was many photos, magazines in their boxes and sheds. This pretty girls were nameless “girl next doors” and filmstars.
The two best known picture was Betty Grable’s and Marilyn Monroe’s pinup picture. Betty Grable was the most favorite pinup girl during the 2nd World War. We have to mention that the Lloyd’s of London assured Betty Grable’s legs for 1million dollar what brought the idea for one of her films, “The million dollar leg”.
There was an important point in 1949, when photographer Tom Kelley offered 50 dollars for (at that time) nameless model Norma Jean Baker posing nude in front of the legendary red velvet. Few years later he sold one of the photographs for a calendar maker firm and the following year for an another. In 1953 Hugh Hefner had bought the spreading rights and used for his brand new men’s magazine. This picture was the “Golden Dreams”.
Yes, the “Golden Dreams” is one of the most beautiful picture of the 20th century.
Marilyn, as we know her movies and irresistible attitude, was an amazing star and these pictures had made before she became star in Hollywood. This serie presents her beauty, carrisma and innocence together.
Photographs of naked women-before Playboy- was varied but no directly pornographs, always had negative overtones as “cheap and dirty”. Hefner tryed to do more with this photos, make them classy as Esquire’s Petty girls, or Varga’s pin-ups, and the photos finally had the better adjudication.
This was the beggining and Playboy brought the honorable and beauty to be and make a sexual revolution.
