The roots of Pin-up art 2
In the 1880s, Jules Cheret’s posters were current that’s why the government come to a decision to tax them. In contempt of this commercial industry blasted!
In the 1890s, most applied artists made posters. One of them was maybe the most known applied artist and illustrator, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. In that years he also started to use posters and made lots of them all over Paris. His first and maybe the well known poster made for the vaudeville Moulin Rouge.
And time passed by after years after years and in 1894 posters were the most important mediums for advertising. In this years Alphons Mucha created the Art Nouveau based on the Byzantium and the movements of Arts and Crafts. In the 1960-70’s the art of poster resurrected.
One of the oldest well-known pin-up styled painting called September Morn made by Paul Chabas in 1912.
In the picture we can see a young, beautiful women bathing in a pond in sunrise. The attitude of this painting is more sophisticated and not directly use sexual overtones. The dominant moment is the charm of the lady and of course one of the roots of cheesecake pin-up art because of the priority of the person and the relations between detalis.
There were/are a lot of arguments seeing this picture but nevertheless the style was popular in calendars for example.
To be continued with the Gibson Girl.
